Norbert was a young wizard who did not have a lot of friends growing up. His small town was close to the oni city and there were a lot of oni that lived in the same town he grew up in. One particular oni named Oikawa, Kawa for short, was a bully who tormented and beat up Norbert quite often. Norbert was terrified of Oikawa and would do his best to avoid the bully. One day when Norbert was talking the very long way home to avoid Oikawa the oni happened to be on the same path. He started to taunt and then beat up Norbert. Fear and anger caused a small spark of magic in Norbert's hands. It was not enough to stop the bully from beating him up but this magic spark caught the attention of a man named Atticus. Atticus was a member of the Finch tribe, one of the many tribes that live in the northern mountains. Atticus was an evoker, and the sage of his tribe. He chased off Oikawa and helped Norbert up, and offered to apprentice him.

Norbert was reluctant to say yes, he would have to leave home and live among the Finch tribe to be an apprentice. The one benefit is that it would get him away from Oikawa so he inevitably agreed. Atticus's training was demanding and at times Norbert wanted to give up. Atticus told Norbert many times that his greatest enemy was not Oikawa, but himself. Norbert started mastering simple magic, and Atticus told him he had great power within him, but Norbert still felt feeble inside. After a year of training Norbert decided to return home to visit his mother. His mother was happy to see him, and things were good for the first few days. Then Norbert ran into Oikawa again, and the oni challenged Norbert to a fight. Norbert was to afraid to fight the oni so he turned and ran away. As he ran Oikawa yelled out that his challenge would last until the end of time and that the next time he saw Norbert he would kill.

Norbert was humiliated and instead of going back to Atticus he left the mountains entirely eventually taking a job for Jomera Honourhelm and meeting those that would become his friends in the Trollskull syndicate. Early on Norbert was reluctant to fight, and always quite nervous. This started to change after the fight with the mimic queen, and when he met Princess Sameria. He agreed to protect Sameria as they travelled to Irongate while also fleeing Faneara's vampire army. Norbert's confidence grew so that when the group was in Amago, the oni city, and ran into Oikawa Norbert was ready to accept hiss challenge The oni had grown and was nearly ten feet tall but Norbert held his ground and used his magic to overwhelm Oikawa's mind and send him running scared. Norbert's confidence grew from there.

Norbert helped defeat Faneara and return Nightstone to its rightful ruler Sameria who would become the queen of Nightstone. Unlike the the rest of the group Norbert stayed in Nightstone where his love and relationship with Queen Sameria grew. He eventually proposed to the Queen, and the wedding ceremony will coincide with reunion of the Trollskull Syndicate.
